CHAPTER 20

COLLIN

Jett scrolled through the lists I’d made throughout the morning while I drove us to the Ice House. There wasn’t a reason I hadn’t been there in over a decade other than life had been insane. I’d sent a few jerseys to the rink over the years, mostly out of thanks for what their program had allowed me to do, but I hadn’t thought much more about it. Trips back to Columbus were always so rushed, and I hadn’t carved out the time to go to the place that had developed me from a kid who couldn’t stand on skates to a guy who got a college scholarship and was ultimately drafted into the NHL.

I’d made the trip so many times with Gramps and then on my own after I got my license that it was still muscle memory to get to the rink. The city had expanded and the businesses were different, but the roads were still the same, leaving me with the ability to focus on Jett and the road at the same time.

“It’s pretty much a rough draft as it stands.”

“Rough draft? You call this a rough draft?” Jett’s voice raised as he spoke. “Collin, you added bathroom breaks every three hours!”

I shrugged. It seemed logical to me. “You said organization is hard for you. I’ve heard you muttering about forgetting to pay bills, not remembering where invoices are, and you were bitching that you forgot to go pee yesterday.”

He turned an unhealthy red shade at the mention of the last one. I was totally perplexed about how someone forgot to pee, but I’d been reading up on ADHD and it was a common thing for those with attention and executive functioning struggles. They got so focused on what they were doing that they forgot everything else: eating, drinking, sleeping, and using the bathroom included. There was also something about struggling to get thoughts and actions in order and easily forgetting the step-by-step process of tasks. I had a feeling Jett struggled with that a lot as well. We were going to tackle one thing at a time and for now, regular bathroom breaks needed to be on the list, whether he liked it or not.

“I had limited information to go on as I made this up. Over the next few weeks we can tweak it to make it work for you.”

For some reason, the statement surprised him more than the bathroom breaks had. “Few weeks? You’re staying here through the funeral?”

Heavy traffic prevented me from looking over, but I nodded. “Yeah, Coach and I talked today and he told me to stay here until the funeral was over. He says my records aren’t going anywhere and I’ve got plenty of time to catch Carter.”

“Huh?”

I sometimes forgot Jett’s life didn’t revolve around hockey. He was utterly clueless, and I actually loved it. “Quincy Carter… His wife is the one with red curly hair.”

“Oh! I remember her! Diane, she’s so sweet. You’d never believe how well she can handle her liquor! Never drink with her, but that’s beside the point.
